The 1951 Canadian Chess Championships were held at the Hotel Vancouver in Vancouver, B.C. from August 24th to September 1st.
A total of 13 players matched wits and competed for the championship trophy, a $300 first prize, and bragging rights for the following year. In the end, Paul Vaitonis of Hamilton, Ontario was crowned the victor. The game between Paul Vaitonis and Dr. Foedore Bohatirchuk in the 13th and final round of play turned out to be the decisive match for the championship (see The Vancouver Daily Province newspaper, September 29th for a recap of that match).
Local newspapers in Vancouver and Victoria covered the championship; leading up to, during, and after the event. Articles from three newspaper are listed below according to their publication dates; The Daily Colonist (Colonist), The Vancouver Daily Province (Province), and The Vancouver Sun (Sun).
