He was a canal boatman and ship builder's labourer. This was a time in
Scotland when canal boats were a major commercial and industrial mode of travel.
A network of canals, completed in the late 1700's, connected Glasgow with
Edinburgh (35 miles to the east) for passengers and cargo. For passenger travel,
3 boats made the daily return journey. A total of 20 locks were passed through
for the journey. It is not known whether John worked on passenger or cargo
boats, but the operations would have been similar to modern transportation
systems, with schedules to keep and amenities provided to passengers (books to
read, and refreshments to consume).
Railway development began in the mid 1800's, eventually phasing out canal
travel. Today the canal network has been mostly filled in, but some sections
have been restored for leisure uses. The typical canal design would have been
eight feet deep with a width of 50 feet at the surface, and twenty-five feet at
the bottom.6,2
